Spring into the Book Fair

Dsc01880

Thank you to everyone for all your support for the school’s Spring Book Fair during March 2007. The Book Fair was held as part of a series of events to celebrate World Book Day and your enthusiasm for books was a treat to see.

The school receives a proportion of each book sold to buy more books for the school. The total amount from this Book Fair to buy books for the school came to over £500.  This makes a fantastic contribution to the school’s learning resources and gives a chance to update and buy some new titles for the school.

Play-Ground Force gets to work on HBJ garden

Img_0474

The school garden has been given a new lease of life by pupils from Y6 and volunteers from Sheffield Hallam University.

The volunteers – 18 pupils and 14 students – worked tirelessly over the weekend to give the garden a well-deserved makeover before the Easter break. The revamped garden will be in full bloom for the school centenary celebrations in summer.

A Castleton Adventure

Pictures_006_7 Our Y4s have just returned from their annual residential visit to Castleton to support their work on invaders and settlers. The two-day trip was packed with activities and challenges and we were lucky to be blessed with some decent weather.

We climbed to the top of the vertigo-inducing Peveril Castle and learnt about the history of the site which dates back over 1000 years. The children also tried their hand at gem panning, took part in an archaeological dig and created their own fossils.

The children (and adults!) also had the chance to shoot a few Norman invaders during the archery sessions and staged a mock battle after creating a Roman siege engine.

For many Y4s this was the first time they had spent a night away from home but the children behaved superbly and impressed staff at the Youth Hostel with their keenness and knowledge.

Invaders and Settlers

Class Y4BM had a visit from John and Andrew, archaeologists from the University of Sheffield, to support work on Invaders and Settlers.

Many thanks to John and Andrew for bringing in some wonderful artefacts for the children to look at.

November Newsletter

Thank you to the H.S.A. and everyone who helped at the Winter Fair on the 25th November. It was a great success and very enjoyable!  It was well supported and raised in the region of £2000. The Book Fair raised over £400 just on that day, with the total amount still to be counted. This benefits school significantly as 60% of the profit is given back to the school in books. Indications are that we will benefit from around £700 worth – this is fantastic and will boost classroom libraries! We have been lucky to have had such amazing support from a number of parents, some of whom have dedicated a lot of time to school to make the above events a success. Thank you!

October Newsletter

This is quite a meaty newsletter in terms of information that will affect you after the half term break. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

Kirkstall Road entrance

This will be the first big difference for you after half term. Acting on police advice we are working with the infant school on improving the security of the site. Main access points to the site will be from Sharrow Vale Road and Junction Road. Kirkstall Road entrance will be locked during school sessions and also after school. The entrance will be open for periods at the beginning and end of the school day as follows:

From school opening until 9:10 a.m.

From 3:10 to 3:45 p.m.

May I remind parents / carers to always enter the school at the main entrance at reception. A number of people are still “popping in” at entrances that are open for children to exit.  I know this may not appear unreasonable but we do take the safety of your children seriously and we need to monitor who is on site and for what purpose at any one time. We all feel rather awkward about challenging visitors who do this because we do not wish to appear unwelcoming – so we politely ask you not to put us in this uncomfortable position.

Also… children are not to play football / ball games before and after school. We ask that while you are on site with your children that they do not climb in the garden area or on the annexe.

HSA minutes 22.01.07

Present: Shirley Harrison, Netti South, Jo Gleig, Susan Steiner Gardner, Sophie Macfadyen, Judith Price, Jill Hallsworth, Cathy Spencer, Lynnette Glossop and Helen Crimlisk.

HSA FUNDS

There was a discussion about how to spend some of the money the HSA has raised. It was felt that some will be held back for the playground re development but that it would be good to spend some now. It was agreed that Hunters Bar School running vests would be purchased for the cross country and athletics events. Shirley and Lynnette to try and organise these as soon as, possible so that they could be used at the last few cross country events. More games for the playground were suggested and it was decided that the school council would be asked how they think the money should be spent. It was agreed that they would be given a budget of £500 to spend. A climbing wall was suggested by Netti. Dobcroft School have one so Jill offered to investigate how much it cost.

HBJ says 'No' to bullying

20061124_0017_3

We marked Anti-Bullying Week with a variety of activities to raise awareness of the problem of bullying and how to deal with it.

The week culminated in a special whole-school assembly with poems, drama and music on the theme of bullying. Our very own band Crazed Conditionz, fresh from their performance in front of the Lord Mayor, then performed their anti-bullying anthem Stop! for the school.

After assembly all pupils, dressed in blue for the occasion, formed a circle around the school with specially made wristbands.

Welcome!
