Wild Spirit Cheerleading

Cheerleading and Gymnastics - two hours on a Sunday

Cheerleading is a fun mix of dance and gymnastics.  It is suitable for all ages boys and girls.  It does help if you have some gymnastic experience but dont worry if you dont. I chose this activity because it was an interesting sport and I wanted to try it out.  Now I am just about to go to a national cheerleading competition... Esther Gamsu

Climbing: Rockstars

Rockstars - supervised climbing and bouldering for under 13s - two hours on a Saturday (held on other days too)

Ranmoor Community Choir

The Ranmoor Children's Choir provides a welcome opportunity for children aged six and above to enjoy singing in a relaxed choral environment. They benefit from professional singing tuition which even the youngest members are able to enjoy and respond to. The choir sings a wide variety of music from classic Disney favourites through simple part-songs to mini-musicals. The choir gives one concert each term and have also sung with groups such as the Sheffield Bach Choir, Hallam Choral Society and the University Singers' Society.

My daughter has been going to Ranmoor Community Choir for about 2 years. She enjoys the singing and the social side of the group. She has learnt a wide repertoire of songs through her involvement in the choir and enjoys the regular performances. This year the choir has performed at an Old People's Home,various Christmas concerts and for Sheffield Homestart.

Swimming Activities

King Edward's Pool have a broad range of activities to suit most needs. These include public swims, swimming lessons, aquarobics, over 50's sessions, adult and child and party hire etc.

Children's swimming lessons - available Monday to Saturday - provides the main stay of the programme. The programme is called the 'Kingfisher Scheme' and takes children from beginner to junior competition in seven levels.

A 'Swim Fitness' programme is available for regular swimmers to improve their fitness. Adult lessons are available in the form of learn to swim or improvement.

The swimming lessons are really popular and can fill up quickly, so there can be a desperate scrambling for places on registration days! However, the lessons are well organised and methodical. It's good to see the improvements that the children make from week to week and their sense of satisfaction as they move up the levels. The main problem for the parents is the temperature of the changing rooms and poolside - good for sweating off a few pounds!

Crosspool Junior Football Club

Crosspool Junior FC prides itself in offering football coaching to young players, developing and improving skills to further the understanding of the football game. It has teams from Under 8s to Under 16s for both boys and girls. All teams play regular league games in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Girl's County League or the Sheffield & District Junior Sunday League (for boys)

My daughter has been training with the under 9s since the season began and is thoroughly enjoying it. The club is very organised and staff are positive and friendly. Managers and coaches of all the Crosspool Juniors teams attend the FA Coaching Course. The atmosphere at training and at games is very supportive - no negative comments are allowed!

Castle Black Belt Academy

Details of activity:

Family oriented martial arts academy offering beginners instruction to black belt training and instructor training.

Classes run throughout the week at the Super Centre based on Valley Road and at local satellite schools at Ecclesall Parish Church Hall and Dore and Totley Church Hall.

Costs: vary depending on number of children and stage of training.

Our family joined and most of us completed the Beginners programme. The structured, supportive and friendly sessions blend the physical skills within an approach which is rooted in fostering the capacity of individuals to do their best in all spheres of their life.

We joined after strong recommendations from friends of our children who had got a lot out of the classes. It was great to do something together as a family, lots of fun, though at times it was a struggle to get us all out early on a Saturday morning. It felt like quite a commitment - both in terms of time and cost in the short-term, though there is a strong sense of laying some solid foundations for the future. Good mix of girls and boys and parents involved in the classes at Ecclesall. Other children from Hunters Bar and High Storrs involved. The awards ceremonies showcase performance and inspired our children to want to go further. We have taken a temporary break and hope to continue in the future.

Sheffield Young Singers

Details of activity:

• Thursdays 4.00pm - 5.00pm
• Geared to 8 - 11 year old children
• Fees: £20.00 for the Spring Term; £2.00 per session.

Helen Cowen, winner of Classic FM's 'Music Teacher of the Year 2005' leads you into songs from many cultures and styles. You don't need to be an experienced singer, all you need is enthusiasm.

Sheffield Young Singers has been invited to perform at two public events in 2008 and are currently commissioning a 'Sheffield Song Book' especially for children.

A few children from HBJ across year groups go this activity. A good mix of children from other local schools too. The sessions are well-organised, lovely atmosphere, with a drink and a treat included. Tracey who has children at HBJ runs a 'walking bus' to take children straight from the school yard to the Church.

Our daughter, now in Y6 loves this group. They have provided a folder with songsheets, the walk home after the activity means that we are usually singing some of the songs she has been practising in the session. It has got our whole family singing some of our favourite songs!

The new online information service detailing Sheffield's services for children, young people and families is now up and running. This is an extensive directory detailing information about services and activities for children and families across the city - it includes childcare training, education, family support, children's health, childcare job vacancies, libraries, leisure activities and special needs support.

 

It is worth browsing the site to get an idea of what is available:

The online service has been developed by Sheffield Information Link. They also have an open resource drop in base in the city centre and can offer telephone advice and support with queries.
