Sports Day 2009
A big thumbs up to everybody who helped make Hunter’s Bar sports day a great success. The sun came out, the races were fun, a great picnic and a picturesque walk back to school FANTASTIC!!
Creative Partnership Celebration
Friday the 3rd July saw the grand finale for the Year 3 Creative Partnership project – ‘Rules and Stuff’. Children, parents, designers and teachers came together to view and celebrate the new structures at Hunter’s Bar Junior school. Following 6 months of pupil led enquiry exploring how spaces can be changed around school, the Creative Partnership artists and designers created the final indoor and outdoor structures.
The three outdoor structures in the playground have been designed by the children to feel more connected to themselves, each other and the wider world. A number of Y3 designed activities, games and props have been installed inside the pockets and in the bottom of each structure to facilitate this connection. The structures can be broken apart and connected in different ways to enable and encourage creative learning and teaching in the school’s outdoor spaces
The indoor structure looks deceptively like a set of ordinary drawers but with further investigation an explosion of creativity is revealed. Hidden inside it are special guides, objects and structures to dramatically transform the use and design of the classroom. Children can develop their drama skills on the collapsible stage; use the friendship umbrellas to solve social problems and even find creative insight underneath the ‘Inspiration Wave’. Please feel free to explore the structures with your children after/ before school.
Finally we would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for all the help and support we have received from parents over the year adding to what has been a tremendously successful first year as a ‘Change school’. The most important outcome is that the children have come to the conclusion that they can change the school for themselves!
Special thanks come from:
The Year 3 children, Mr. Beauchamp, Mr. Jenkin, Mr. Bywaters, Miss Miller, Lisa Proctor, Nicky Ward, and Ruth Ben-Tovim
Kwik Cricket - Sheffield Finals Congratulations to the eight Y5 boys who represented our school in the Sheffield finals that took place at Abbeydale sports Club on Tuesday 30th June. The competition was for all the teams that had won their local kwick cricket festivals (Hunters Bar won the Hallam festival) and involved 21 teams across the city. All the games that were played were extremely close, our best result being a victory over Abbeydale Primary. The festival was won by Mosborough Primary who will be representing Sheffield at Headingley next year. Congratulations to: Tom Blacksell, Laurence Jeffrey-Badger, Louis Marven, Suleyman Ahmed, Raheel Nasir, Lewis Charles, Joe Fleischmann, Henry Chan. Sheffield Children's Book Award The annual Sheffield Children's Book Award is being judged at the moment by a diligent group of our Y5 pupils! Each summer, 6 books are nominated for the award and Sheffield children are asked to read all six books and vote for their favourite. We are on a tight schedule this summer so we asked for any children who could read 6 books in a fortnight. Unbelievably, 20 children volunteered and are at present working their way through the selected books. Some of our children are reading at the rate of a book a day! Thank you to all of those Y5s who volunteered to read - we will let you know the book that they voted as the best.
All parents should by now have received a copy of the report about our recent Ofsted inspection, if not it is available to view on the Ofsted site at www.ofsted.gov.uk; our School Profile is also available at http://schoolprofile.parentscentre.gov.uk.
We would appreciate any feedback you may have.
Sheffield Star 2 July 2009:
'Corus staff help youngsters learn about steel recycling'
Corus employees visited Hunters Bar Juniors to help the children in their work on recycling and sustainability. "Sustainability and the environment play an ever more important role in day to day life and will play an even bigger role in generations to come," said Nicola Bennett, one of the Corus representatives. "We believe that educating students is the key to securing a sustainable future and it was good to hear the views of Sheffield's future voices."

Outdoor Athletics Finals
Well done to all the athletes that competed in the outdoor athletics finals at Woodbourn Road on 25th June. The evening was a great success with many children improving on their personal best times and distances. We hope that the Y6s will continue with athletics at Secondary school. Many ex-Hunter’s Bar runners are doing really well for their schools and Sheffield.
We also hope to see the current Y4s and Y5s running, jumping and throwing again next season when we can look forward to another strong team.
If you didn’t compete this year why don’t you have a go next year?
