Parent Governor Vacancy
Calling all interested and supportive parents - we need you to consider being a Parent Governor.
The one vacancy for a Parent Governor still remains and if you were perhaps interested last time but thought, "I don't think I can do it," or " I won't know what to do," please think again. Hunter's Bar Junior School has a wonderful team of governors who are wanting to help and support you to enjoy this fulfilling role.
If you would like to speak to me or another governor to find out more please come and talk to me if you see me on the playground or ring Mrs Gregory in the school office to organise a time that's convenient. I don't expect to be inundated......
- go on, why not?
See attached letter for information. Closing date: Monday 11 May 2009
Mobile Phones in school
Children bringing mobile phones into school should make sure that they are switched off and handed to the office. We regret that school cannot accept responsibility for any phones brought into school.
We ask that phones are not brought to school unless absolutely necessary as reception staff are unable to deal with parents and visitors satisfactorily because of the number of children handing in and collecting phones at the beginning and end of the day.
Creative partnership update
This week’s CP session has seen year 3 children sign up to 1 of 3 creative jobs to take the project forward into the summer term: journalists, indoor creative specialists and outdoor creative specialists.
The journalists have been assigned the role of supporting the specialists in their weekly projects by helping to design follow up sessions, reflecting on progress and sharing feedback to the wider school.
The specialists will be designing, creating, experimenting and changing the indoor and outdoor spaces in accordance to the journalists’ reflections. They will also be exploring rules and objects within the spaces.
Children will be exploring temporary and permanent structures, tool kits for holistic /multiple intelligence learning and new rules for using and exploring spaces.
In depth reflections on the outcomes each week will help us refine the focus of the project.
Friday 24th April – Children have started to create ideas around designs for indoor and outdoor spaces, which could support learning, activities and feelings.
Thanks to everyone for their support and their help in class.
Next activities: Week beginning 11th May 09. Alex Beauchamp, John Jenkin and the Year 3 Team.
X-country
The final race of the x-country calendar was the relays held at Bannerdale (the playing fields off
Teams of four raced against other schools, each team member running one circuit of the course tigging the next team member and so on until all four had ran. We were extremely lucky to be able to enter 2 girls teams and 2 boys teams.
All teams were a credit to the school, supporting each other over a fast and challenging course. The girls teams came 6th and 15th and the boys teams came 6th and 27th overall. Well done to all runners!
It would be great to see the current runners running next year in either the primary or secondary races. The first Primary race of the Autumn League is 3rd October at Ecclesfield. It will also be great to see new runners from any year. Results and fixtures can be found at www.sfss.co.uk.
Thank you to all runners who have returned their vests, any outstanding vests can be returned to Mr Timbers or Mrs Baillie.
Thanks again to all parents for their continued support and help
Mr Timbers
Contact information
If your child had an accident at school, could we contact you?
It is very frustrating for us when we need to contact parents urgently and we are unable to do so because the information we have is out of date.
Please keep school informed of any changes in your contact details, eg, change of address, work phone numbers and mobile numbers. Also although we do leave messages on phones whenever possible we often find that messages are not picked up during the school day so please supply numbers where we can reach you. With the increased use of mobile phones we have found that the school phone bill has been rising so it would be helpful if we could have landline numbers to use in the first instance as these are cheaper for school to ring.
Currently we are sending the newsletter out by email to some parents and in the future we hope to send out more of our letters by email.
If you would like a new contact form to update your details or if you would like to receive letters by email please contact the school office.

ELECTION OF PARENT GOVERNORS TO THE GOVERNING BODY OF HUNTERS BAR JUNIOR SCHOOL
Would you like to be a Governor of your child’s school? As you may know, a number of places on the Governing Bodies of Sheffield schools are reserved for parents. We have one vacancy for a Parent Governor.
It is a chance for you as a parent to have an influence over the education the school provides for all its children. Governors make decisions about many aspects of the school including the curriculum, staffing and the school’s finances.
The role of Governors is vital to the education of the children of Sheffield so we would urge you to consider standing. In case you feel daunted by the responsibilities, training will be available to help you understand your role as Parent Governor.
There is also a very important role for Parent Governors in providing a link between the school and parents. The Parent Governor will be expected to attend at least three full meetings of the School Governing Body each year and also other meetings of Committees of the Governing Body. He/she will take an active interest in the school and the children and help promote the parental view at meetings of the School Governing Body.
All parents and guardians of children at the school are eligible to stand for Election as a Parent Governor. If there are more nominations than vacancies, an election is held. The election will be organised by the Head Teacher of the school and every parent of a pupil in the school will receive a voting paper and will have the opportunity to vote. Parents indicate their choice by sending in their vote to the School. The term of office is four years. If you wish to stand for election you may nominate yourself as a candidate. No proposer or seconder is required but you must signify your intention to stand in writing to the school by Monday 11th May at 9 a.m. It would also be helpful if you would provide a short personal statement with your nomination to circulate to parents
Please note that there are certain restrictions, which prevent a person from standing as a Parent Governor.
No person, apart from an ex-officio Governor or someone appointed to a failing school, which needs measures, may be a member of more than two Governing Bodies of LEA Maintained schools. People who are bankrupt may not serve as Governors, nor may people who have in the previous five years been sentenced to three months or more in prison without the option of a fine, people who have been sentenced to a period of more than two and a half years of imprisonment may not stand within twenty years of that conviction and anyone who has been sentenced to a period of imprisonment of five years or more is totally disqualified.
Should you be in any doubt about any aspect of parental elections, nominations or appointments, do not hesitate to contact me at the school or you may wish to telephone the School Governor Support Team at the Education Department (telephone 273 5792 or 273 5763).
Yours sincerely
JILL HALLSWORTH
