Y4 Residential to Castleton
This was another great success and got a big "thumbs up" from the children. It's wonderful when all the children AND staff enjoy it - and this is exactly what can be said for this year's trip again. Fortunately the weather held well and the children were able to make their climb up to Peveril Castle as well as numerous other activities on the Monday - I'm sure this is what helped what was quite a settled night before another busy day on Tuesday. Well done Y4. Read more inside this newsletter...
Parents' Evenings 17th and 19th March

Maths Focus
Following Monday's assembly, we are focusing on raising the profile of maths for the rest of this term. RM Maths has been timetabled for as many children to access it as possible. Every day there will be a 10 minute Mental & Oral session extra to the usual maths lesson and as many opportunities within the curriculum and real life to apply maths skills.
Please encourage your child to use and develop their mental maths skills as much as possible in real life situations and to use SAM Learning at home.

Castleton 2009
Sixty-seven tired, but happy Y4 children have just returned from 2 days and 1 night at the Castleton Youth Hostel. They have just experienced their first residential and for some their first night away from home. During the day there were a number of exciting activities to enjoy, such as; building a Roman siege engine, undergoing Roman battle training, gem panning, an archaeological dig, and visiting Peveril Castle, to name but a few. These experiences really do enhance the history curriculum we cover in school and the children learned a great deal while they were there. All the staff at the youth hostel and the school staff who went were extremely impressed by the attitude, behaviour and knowledge of the children; they were a credit to the school and to themselves. A great time was had by all.
Puppet theatre The Year 4 classes have been working hard to write, produce, make and perform a puppet show for the Year 1 children in the Infants School. The children worked in groups and had to co operate together to organise a piece of quality theatre. Time was always a pressure, but as in all the great performances it was all right on the night, or in our case the morning of the 6th March. The Year 1’s were a fabulous audience and gave the children some encouraging feedback. It was really beneficial for both sets of children and we are looking to provide more opportunities for future links
HEALTHY CHALLENGE WEEK is coming! Healthy Challenge week is the week beginning March 30th. During this week we will be challenging everyone to be healthier and there will be loads of things to do in school. There will be fitness challenges throughout the week, science challenges, debates and design technology work too. We are hoping parents will take part during the week - maybe you could come in and help your child's class, or help re launch the Tuck shop. You might want to come in and bring some healthy food for the children to taste or join the walking bus one day? Maybe you have a recipe for packed lunches which is successful - why not share it and have a Healthy Hunter's Bar Packed lunch recipe booklet........... if you would like to help in any way during the week see your child's class teacher, Mrs Brocklesby or Mrs Harrison. Looking forward to a great healthy week !
During Challenge week children will have the opportunity to sign up for a lunchtime activity run by qualified coaches from the School Sports Partnership.
Indoor rowing event
Children will have the chance to try a new sport, and an activity only recently adopted by the Points School Sport Partnership. Indoor Rowing is a new concept that attempts to engage children in a different sporting event to the usual school sport curriculum and also hopes to promote healthy and active lifestyles. Hunters Bar will be the first Primary School to have undertaken this event.
Indoor rowing utilises rowing machines you may find in a local gym, connecting them to a laptop computer, and which via a projector, can create a virtual race between you and your friends.
The race will be projected onto a screen for you and all your friends to watch. All scores will be recorded and prizes may be awarded for the fastest times of the day.
Marathon Day
This is a chance for each class to run as far as they can in 30 minutes! Every member of the class will take part and be asked to run 100 m at a time as part of teams of 5 or 6. The more times they run the distance, the further the class goes, it’s as simple as that. If you manage to run the course 10 times each in your class, you will have run to Barnsley! Hopefully you can get further than that, who knows maybe Manchester!
Children will be competing as a class against other classes in school. The total distance run by the school will be calculated; could we make it to France?
Red Nose Rampage
On Friday the 13th of March, Hunter’s Bar Junior school was a blur of red in the assembly hall. We asked the whole school to dress in red as part of the event Comic Relief. In assembly we had fun with a red ball with pictures and numbers on it. A teacher, Mr Watson, threw the ball onto the crowd. He said that if the person who caught the ball had their right hand on a number, the children had to shout out the multiples up to twelve. If the person caught the ball with their hand on a picture, the teachers had to do what it said. Luckily (for the children) all that was caught was pictures. Everyone smiled and laughed when all the teachers in the room did funny things. It was fantastic assembly, for the children probably that is.
Also during Red Nose Day many activities were taking place through out the school, different ones for different year groups. In Year 6 there was a doodle board which you could draw lots of different drawings, in red of celebrities. In all years you could also wear a funny hat or make your self a funny walk to raise money! You could also do sponsor silence, all for money. In year three they all changed there names to make them have red in it, such as Fred. Some people made buns to sell for money. In one class, they managed to raise £44.12 from selling buns and donations in the class.
Overall Red Nose Day was a great success and we raised lots of money which is all going to a good cause.
Without everyone’s help none of it would have been possible so we would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped raise money for comic relief and to the teachers for putting up with the chaos!

Cross Country Update
The City Championships took place at Graves Park last Saturday. The weather was bright but windy and there was a strong headwind when running up the long hill. Well done to the following runners:- Joe Ahluwalia, Theo Bebbington, Ellie Bondswell, Ruby Downing, Miriam Hide, Matilda Rhys-Kristensen Alice Shibili, Isaac Wilson, Tom Blacksell, Max Boydell-Smith, Maggie Colvill, Joe Fleishmann, Emma Godden, James Godden, Thomas Lloyd-Hughes, Guy Macfarlane, Charlotte Moran, Elsa Moxley, Jasmine Smith, and Daisy Wales. There were many personal bests and top 50 placings with 3 runners finishing 11th in their respective races, just missing out on a championship certificate! As usual everyone ‘gave their all’ and were a credit to the school. The Y4 girls team were 5th (by one point), the Y5/6 girls team were 7th and the Y5/6 boys’ team, were 3rd . Unfortunately as there were only 3 Y4 boys their tremendous efforts didn’t count towards the team competition as a team must have 4 members. The next race, the relays at Bannerdale (the playing fields off
I look forward to seeing the current runners running next year in either the primary or secondary races. The first Primary race of the Autumn League is 3rd October at Ecclesfield. It will also be great to see new runners from any year. Results and fixtures can be found at http://www.sfss.co.uk
Thanks again to all parents for their continued support and help with marshalling and result taking.

GO BANANAS for fairtrade
Thank you to everyone who took part - nearly three quarters of the school ate fair trade bananas on March 6th at 1.50pm. Children who didn't like bananas ate any fair trade fruit they enjoyed too!
We were part of the world's biggest Fair trade banana eating event and enjoyed every minute - Well done everyone.

PARENT SUGGESTIONS: Your ideas really count!
What else can we do to improve? Please use the suggestion box in the foyer. Recently there have been a couple of Parent suggestions that we are now acting on.
Placing a lockable posting box for parents to place labelled envelopes for dinner money etc when there is a queue at the office.
We are working with School Sports Partnership to develop constructive play at lunchtime.
It is always lovely to be told when things have gone well but it is also very important to us that we know about any issues or concerns that you may have and for you to know that we are very willing to work with parents to help the school deliver the best education we can for your children.
In summary: Parent’s evenings will be on the 17th and 19th March Check out the website and parent calendar. Look out for the milk letter to order school milk for the Summer term. Please remember that if your child requires milk next term it must be ordered before the end of this term. A letter should be sent shortly. Park safely and considerately. If you wish to receive future copies of the newsletter by email please contact the school office.
