Staffing Changes
At the end of this term we say “Good-bye” to Marlene Foster who will be saying her good bye to teaching and to this school, where she has spent many years of her very successful career. I am sure you will join me in wishing her all the best for her future plans - which include enjoying her hobbies!
We wish Cath Thomas all the best for the birth of her second child in October. Sarah Bustamante has been appointed to cover the maternity leave from September.
We welcome Keith Wigley as our new Assistant Caretaker. Keith has already started and has been appointed to work each day to cover the lunchtime period and afternoons.
Rachel Holmes will be a new teacher joining the school to teach P.E. She joins us from Athelstan Primary School and will be supporting us with new developments in linking with High Storrs and the School Sports Co-ordinator Partnership Programme from September.
Athletics
Hunter’s Bar had a very successful evening at the District Athletics Competition at Woodbourn Road in May. All the children who competed did so with great determination and were very encouraging of each other. We were justly proud of the team spirit and the way they represented the school. As a result a large number of children have qualified for the City Finals in a range of events on June 29th.
Swimming Gala
On Thursday May 26th the Inter schools swimming gala took place at Ponds Forge. Before this 60 children came to King Edwards for the trials. Everyone tried really hard but unfortunately not everyone could be in the team. We hope that children who were unsuccessful this year will still try again next year.
The gala was organised in two divisions, A and B. Each division had 10 schools in it. We were in the A division (because of previous performance). The team took part in 10 relay events. Each event was mixed age range and had either 4 or 8 children in.
It was a tense and exciting evening as we fluctuated between 3rd and 4th place. Going into the 10th event (an 8 person relay that was mixed age and gender) we were third. At the end of the 10th relay they did not announce the results. We had a tense wait until the presentations. Fortunately we held our third place over Lound Junior and were presented with medals. Our team, which was one of the largest there (the minimum number was 8), gave great effort and performance.
Throughout the evening their behaviour was a credit to the school as they cheered each other on and watched sensibly and respectfully whilst the other division swam.
Also a big thanks to Angela Jackson, who was an official timekeeper for the school, and to all the other parents, who offered their vocal support and/or helped with the trials.
Pupils coming into school
As part of an attempt to make the most of learning time there will be a small change to routine. Children have been used to hearing the bell but waiting for the whistle before entering school. Starting on July 4th (the start of Health Week) the bell will be the signal for children to come in. Teachers will be on duty as normal to supervise the children into the building.
Health Week
Thank you to parents who have given ideas and offered help. We’ve got some exciting things happening in school during the week:
We will be offering various activities to keep fit to each year group. Some years will have Break dancing and Bollywood dancing, some may have Tai Chi, Skipping or Yoga. Some classes may choose to go for a walk or run in the park and every year will be having their Sports afternoon and a Rowing Challenge.
Also during this week classes will be trying to think of healthy ways to eat, looking at how to make food more interesting and healthy and having a go at making and tasting different things! Some classes will be making songs and music adverts to help us through the week!
The Fruity Tuck Shop will open for 4 days this week from 8.40 - 8.50a.m and again at morning playtime. All the fruit will be priced at 20p and some of the fruit on offer will be apples, small oranges, grapes, melon slices and strawberries, there maybe other fruits too!
