Dear Parents / Carers,
After careful consideration it has been decided to mix class groups for Y3 and Y4 for next year. This is being undertaken for a range of reasons. The most important reason is to redress any imbalances that have developed as children leave or join the school and as children change and develop. Our aim is that each of the three classes in the year group has a reasonable mix of ability, gender, behaviour and ethnicity. Another reason for mixing is to broaden the range of children with whom pupils interact, at least once during their time in junior school. There is no hard and fast pattern for class mixing. It takes place as and when the need arises.
This is a very complex task and teachers spend considerable time to aim to achieve the best balance
The staff know the children extremely well by this time in the school year. They are aware of friendships; including those that are conducive to children learning and which are not. Teachers are sensitive when considering friendship groups but it is worth emphasising that children will have access to friends across the year during playtimes, which is the ideal time for socialising. In addition, with various teaching groupings operating during the week, there are more opportunities for children to mix beyond their class.
Once the decisions have been made it is not possible to make changes. As you will appreciate even one or two changes can have a knock-on effect which will upset the class balance.
Children and parents will be informed of new classes at the very end of the summer term. This is because staffing will not be established until after interviews in July and it can be very distracting for children to know their new class early and while there are still a number of working weeks left this term.
As many of you may know Mrs Foster will be finishing her long and very successful career in teaching at the end of this term and Governors are in the process of finding a replacement to cover both her teaching role and her role as Year Leader.
I would be grateful if you could sign below and return the slip to your child’s teacher to indicate that you have seen and read this letter. I hope that the information is clear. If you have any concerns or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
